Giving a new twist to the continuing crisis within the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, a recently retired Army major general has been appointed to take charge of the administration of the state controlled television channel.
Major General Sunil Silva has been appointed to the newly created post of Additional Deputy Director General, Administration, of the SLRC, on the recommendation of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, informed sources told the Daily Mirror.

Maj. Gen. Sunil Silva was in charge of the Army Signals Regiment prior to his retirement on January 18, 2008. He was also the military secretary in charge of transfers and recruitment at the time of his retirement. He is expected to assume duties at the SLRC today.

The reason for the appointment is believed to be to let the military take over duties in the event of an emergency such as a labour strike or tough trade union action, which could lead to a complete breakdown of transmissions, SLRC sources said.

It is learnt that the post given to the military man is a newly created one.
