JVP media team threatened by govt. supporter

A team from the JVP’s Media Unit was threatened by a supporter of Minister T.B. Ekanayake at a police roadblock in Mahawa, Ella last night (Aug. 17th), the party said.

The man, named Hemantha and claimed to be president of the SLFP’s Mahawa branch, had come in a tipper without number plates and accosted the JVP vehicle around 11.00 pm.

Armed with a long Kris knife, he had abused the rival party activists in the presence of the police and hit the windscreen of their vehicl.When he had attempted to attack the driver, the police had restrained him and taken to Mahawa police station, where he continued to threaten both the JVP and the police from his cell.

The JVP Media Unit said the man had come for the attack from the house of a Northwestern Provincial Councilor identified as Lal.
