Supreme Court’s grant of leave to proceed and interim relief in challenges to new television regulations

14th November 2008 The Free Media Movement (FMM) welcomes the Supreme Court’s granting of leave to proceed today in the challenges to the new regulations concerning private television broadcasters made by the Minister of Mass Media and Information.

FMM also welcomes the Court’s issuing a stay order suspending the operation of these regulations until the Court has decided the merits of the cases. FMM, along with several partner media and civil society organisations as well as affected private television broadcasters, have filed several petitions before the Supreme Court complaining that the new regulations violate the right to equality and the freedom of expression.

With the grant of leave to proceed and interim relief today, we hope that the Supreme Court will agree with our contention that the impugned regulations are inimical to the free exercise of fundamental rights and have been promulgated with the insidious intention of controlling the free media.
