Sunday Leader gagged

Saturday, 06 December 2008 12:25

The Mt. Lavinia magistrate yesterday (Dec. 05) allowed an ex-parte application by the Defence Secretary and stopped Leader Publications from publishing anything referring to the Defence Secretary till 18th December this year.

Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who was present at the Mt. Lavinia courts for his application, told courts that Sunday Leader has been publishing extremely defamatory articles about him and thus requested courts to stop such publications in the future.

Speaking on this in parliament yesterday afternoon, MP Dayasiri Jayasekera said the Defence Secretary wanted Sunday Leader gagged as the Leader Publications were preparing a very revealing article to be published on the assassination of Late General Janaka Perera.

This would have exposed many and therefore the Defence Secretary hurried to courts to have that stopped.

“This is against the right of expression. This violates the fundamental right of expression enshrined in the constitution.” said MP Jayasekera in parliament.

The Leader Publications would have to show cause in courts on 18th December as to why they should not be debarred from publishing anything on Defence Secretary.
